Traveling by plane can be an exciting and liberating experience, but for some people the thought of flying can generate significant levels of anxiety and fear. At Iberia we understand these concerns and are committed to offering innovative solutions to help our passengers overcome their fears. One of the most recent and effective initiatives is the use of virtual reality.
VR´s three-dimensional simulated environments, in which users can interact realistically, can be used to recreate each phase of an airplane trip from check-in to landing, providing passengers with an immersive experience that helps them familiarize themselves with the process and reduce their anxiety.
The Sequence of Events
The process begins with a personalised assessment to understand the passenger’s level of fear and anxiety. The main fear triggers are identified through interviews and questionnaires, allowing the VR experience to be adapted to the specific needs of each individual.
The passenger then receives an introduction to the VR equipment and a brief test session – a step crucial to ensure they are comfortable and familiar with the technology before diving into the full simulation.
The Flight Simulation Itself
Check-in and Security Procedures: Passengers can learn and practice every step of the process, from checking baggage to going through security checks, reducing fear of the unknown.
Boarding and Takeoff: Proceeding from the gate, passengers board, stow carry-ons, and seat themselves, followed by safety announcements and takeoff. This phase is essential to help passengers manage the anxiety associated with these critical moments of the flight.
During the Flight: Passengers experience realistic conditions such as turbulence, food service, and interaction with the crew. This part of the simulation is key to getting used to the sensations and sounds experienced in a real flight.
Landing: As with an actual flight, the ¡VR experience concludes with landing and disembarkation to the arrival gate, allowing passengers to experience the full cycle of an airplane trip.
Anxiety-control and Relaxation Techniques: Throughout the simulation, passengers learn and practice techniques such as deep breathing, positive visualisation, and meditation – all valuable tools that can also be used during actual flight to remain calm and collected.
Benefits of VR for Fear of Flying
- A Safe and Controlled Environment: VR provides a sheltered environment where passengers can safely face their fears. They can pause or stop the simulation at any time, giving them a sense of control and security.
- Gradual Exposure: Being exposed bit by bit to anxiety-inducing situations helps passengers manage their fear progressively, increasing their confidence with each session.
- Familiarisation with the Process: By getting to know all aspects of a flight, from check-in to disembarkation, passengers reduce fear of the unknown and feel more prepared to face a real flight.
- Greater Confidence and Calm: Practicing relaxation techniques and repeated exposure to the simulated environment helps passengers gain confidence and feel calmer when boarding an airplane.
