How to Travel with Your Surfboard, Kiteboard, or Bodyboard on Every Flight

11/08/2025

The sea awaits at every destination, but for many travelers, nothing beats arriving with their own gear: the board they trust, the kite they know, and the accessories that make them feel at home on any wave. Iberia allows the transport of surf, windsurf, kiteboard, and bodyboard equipment, as long as specific conditions are met. Knowing these rules in advance is the best way to travel without surprises.

Transport Rules by Sport

At Iberia, each passenger may carry one piece of sports equipment per flight, always subject to available space in the hold. These are the official size and packaging requirements:

  • Surf / Kiteboard / Wave board: One board and/or one kite accepted, with a maximum length of 3.5 meters.

  • Bodyboard / Boogie board: One piece of equipment up to 100 x 50 x 20 cm.

  • Windsurf: Complete equipment (board, boom, daggerboard, mast, and sail) must be wrapped together.

Important: Due to their size, this type of baggage cannot be transported on regular conveyor belts. Iberia staff at the airport may arrange special handling to move it to the aircraft, and any costs incurred will be charged to the passenger.

Check-in and Airport Timing

To ensure smooth handling, Iberia recommends arriving at the airport well in advance. This allows time to check in the equipment, transfer it to the cargo area, and guarantee its boarding. Transport is subject to a special fee, so always review the updated price list before your flight.

Practical Tips to Protect Your Board

Beyond official regulations, there are a few steps you can take to make sure your equipment arrives safely:

  • Use a sturdy, padded board bag.

  • Remove the fins and pack them separately.

  • Reinforce delicate areas with foam, clothing, or cardboard.

  • Label your gear with your name and contact phone number.

Travel Light, Surf Better

Bringing your own equipment means you won’t have to rely on rentals or adjust to unfamiliar gear. From the beaches of the Canary Islands to the waves of Portugal or the Caribbean, your board travels with you, ready for that first session in the water. By knowing Iberia’s rules and preparing your equipment properly, flying with your surfboard, kiteboard, windsurf, or bodyboard will be as easy as choosing your next wave-filled destination.
