Health and Special Needs: Tips for Worry-Free Travel

28/05/2025

An essential part of stress-free travel with special needs is packing well. Here are some practical tips:

  • Medication: Always carry medications in your carry-on luggage and in their original packaging, along with a prescription or a medical report in English or Spanish. This makes security checks easier and avoids complications in the event of delays or lost luggage.
  • Medical Equipment: If you´re traveling with devices such as oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, crutches, canes, or wheelchairs, please notify us when booking. Many of these devices can be transported at no additional cost, but they must meet technical requirements for use on board.
  • Medical Documentation: In addition to your medical report (if necessary), include a list of your allergies, current treatments, and emergency contact information in your bag. This will facilitate care in any circumstance.

At the Airport: What Services You Can Request

To make your time at the airport smoother, you can request assistance for people with reduced mobility (PRM). This assistance is available at all Iberia airports and covers:

  • Assistance from the airport entrance to the aircraft gate (and vice versa)
  • Priority at security checkpoints and boarding
  • Use of manual or electric wheelchairs
  • Assistance with carry-on baggage
  • Alternative communication for people with visual or hearing disabilities

It’s important to request these services at least 48 hours before your flight to ensure availability. You can do so during your booking, by calling customer service, or in the “Manage your booking” section on iberia.com.

During the Flight: Well-being and Comfort on Board

Once on board, the crew is ready to help you have a smooth and safe flight. Although they cannot administer medication or provide medical care, they can provide you with:

  • Access to larger spaces if you have previously requested it
  • Seat changes for greater comfort (when possible)
  • Use of the accessible bathroom on long-haul flights
  • Support with personal belongings or portable medical equipment

For long flights, we recommend that you:

  • Drink water frequently to avoid dehydration
  • Do light stretching exercises periodically
  • Wear comfortable clothing and compression socks if prescribed by your doctor
  • Use neck or support pillows if you need additional stability
