When traveling by plane, it’s important to be aware of the regulations regarding the use of electronic devices to ensure a safe and comfortable flight for both you and your fellow passengers. Below we explain which devices you can use and which are prohibited during the flight.
Devices Allowed During the Flight
You may use most of your electronic devices as long as they are in “airplane mode” or the equivalent mode offered by most devices. When service is available and the cellular signal indicates it, you can activate Wi-Fi and use data to connect to the internet. Some of the devices you can use in airplane mode include:
- Mobile phones
- Music players
- Portable video game consoles
- Bluetooth devices (such as headphones)
- Laptops (with or without an external mouse)
- Tablets and PDAs
Remember that on Iberia and many other airlines that Wi-Fi is available on almost all aircraft, allowing you to connect to the internet during the flight, as long as the mobile signal allows it.
And one specific exception: During takeoff and landing, you must stow and turn off larger devices such as laptops or video game consoles. These devices must also be properly stored to avoid any potential inconvenience to other passengers and cabin crew.
Checked Baggage and Electronic Devices
It is important to note that electronic devices must be turned off inside checked baggage. However, there is one exception: tracking devices like the Apple AirTag can be transported in checked baggage, as they do not affect the operation of aircraft systems.
What to Do if a Device or its Battery Has a Problem?
If a device or battery is damaged, shows excessive heat or smoke, or is lost inside the aircraft structure, you must immediately report it to the crew. In this case, be sure to keep the device off (not in hibernation mode), in a visible and protected location to prevent accidental activation. It´s also important to disable any functions that could turn it on, such as alarms, and not charge it at any time.
Prohibited Devices
Some devices are strictly prohibited during the flight because they can interfere with the aircraft’s electronic systems. These include:
- Remote-controlled toys
- Televisions
- Computer peripherals or video games
- AM and FM radios
- Cordless computer mice
- E-cigarettes (can only be transported in carry-on baggage)
Recreational devices such as hoverboards, electric bicycles, electric scooters, air wheels, and mini-Segways are also prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.
