7 Keys to Make It Through Long-Haul Flights Without Pain

29/01/2025

Travelling is an amazing experience, but when it comes to long flights, comfort becomes a priority to make the most of every moment. And with these tips,  any long-distance flight will feel more bearable.

Say Goodbye to Clogged Ears

During takeoff and landing, pressure changes can clog your ears and cause quite a bit of discomfort. The solutions are easy: chewing gum, yawning, and/or using the technique of plugging your nose with your fingers and blowing without letting out the air. These simple tricks help equalise the pressure in your ears and prevent discomfort during the flight.

Adjust your internal clock to the destination’s time zone as soon as you arrive. If you land in the morning, avoid sleeping during the day so that nighttime sleep helps you synchronize your body. On shorter trips, try to keep your normal schedule, as long as the time difference is not more than four hours. This way you can make the most of every second of your experience.

Keep Your Body Moving

Sitting for long hours can cause swelling in the feet and ankles. Basic rule: Wear comfortable, loose clothing and avoid placing objects under your seat to stretch your legs. Also do simple exercises from your seat, such as:

  • Tilt your head gently from side to side whilst breathing deeply.
  • Stretch your arms up as if to touch the ceiling, then place them behind your head.
  • Lift your heels while supporting your toes, simulating the movement of standing on tiptoe.
  • If possible, get up and walk around the cabin to improve circulation; you´ll return to your seat more relaxed!

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Take Advantage of the Onboard Freebies

On long flights, many airlines, including Iberia, provide blankets, pillows, socks and headphones for added comfort. And who doesn´t love freebies? Socks allow you to rest more comfortably without the pressure of shoes, while blankets and pillows make it easier to rest. Headphones, meanwhile, make in-flight entertainment more enjoyable.

Create Your Own Space

Bring a toiletries bag with your most essential items, such as moisturiser, lip balm, an eye mask, and earplugs. These little details can make all the difference on your trip, allowing you to rest better and feel more comfortable.

Keep a Positive Attitude

Mindset is key. Are you afraid of flying? Don’t worry, just think of the flight as a welcome part of your trip. The perfect time to unwind, read a good book, watch a movie or just relax. Take a break and relax!

With these tips, enjoying a long flight will be much easier and more comfortable. Pack your bags and experience the magic of travelling comfortably from start to finish with Iberia!
